British BIDs to meet the “Queen of Shops”

Mary Portas the ‘Celebrity Shopping Guru’ has been commissioned by the Prime Minister David Cameron to lead an independent ‘High Street’ review into the future of our local and
regional retail businesses.

British BIDs is to meet her and the BIS team next week to ensure your voice is heard. We will be joined by our partners The Green Brain, Jones Lang LaSalle and Meercat Associates.

We plan to cover a number of key themes in our working session including:

Retail – With our Commercial Partner, Jones Lang LaSalle we will discuss the importance and value of BIDs across the country; the current state of the retail industry; the dynamics of shopping centres; and the factors affecting the health of town centres

The Future – a thoroughgoing review of Britain’s High Streets is arguable long overdue. Britain’s BIDs have a vital role to play in both understanding the complex evolution of the High Street and in helping to shape its future.

The Economy – with global markets still nervous about a return to recession and Britain’s own economy far from secure, the billions of pounds generated in Business Improvement Districts and the hundreds of thousands of jobs they support make them central to the UK economy BIDs need to be actively involved in Government proposals and plans.

Our Communities – the shocking and tragic events of the past few weeks have once again demonstrated the apparent fragility of our social fabric. Some of the areas worst affected by the outbreaks of rioting and lawlessness were in or near Business Improvement Districts and BIDs are helping with the physical and social repair of those communities. But the majority of BID areas were NOT affected – we must understand that too.
