HammersmithLondon’s free giveaway performance of ‘Aladdin’ at the Lyric had the full house standing, clapping and even some dancing in the aisles. The performance earlier this week on Tuesday 6 December.

“Brilliant! Spectacular! Great dance moves!” said one enthusiastic viewer. “I didn’t expect to like it so much; I don’t mind admitting I was put off by the word panto, but this was just great.”

Set in the wondrous and fantastical land of Ha-Ma-Smiit (do you see what they did there?), the characters of Wishy Washy Funky Monkey and Abanazar transported the Arabian Nights tale of local-boy-does-well-with-palace-princess-with-aid-of-genie into a decidedly urban modern reality.

Less panto foolishness than panto ghetto-stylee, both adults and children sang along to Jessie J and Beyonce tunes – with one traditional touch: Clive Rowe as a hilariously brazen Widow Twanky, all bad gags and garish nylon petticoats.

What’s On stage review comments: “Aladdin is an X Factor style mash-up of street hip-hop and traditional panto. It’s a rocky union but, just like the Princess, you’ll be won over.”. This definitely rings true.

Congratulations to all the cast and crew.
