London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Route Network - Temporary Road Changes

Next summer, London will host the world’s two largest spectacular events, the Olympic and Paralympic Games – the equivalent of hosting 26 major world sports championships together in the same city at the same time! Competitors, visitors, Games officials and the international media will be coming to London and the focus of the world will be on our city.

This notice advises you of the next phase of temporary changes that Transport for London (TfL) plans to make – on behalf of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) - to certain roads as part of the London 2012 Games. These changes are needed to ensure we make the 2012 Games a success for visitors, businesses and Londoners alike. This phase is different from earlier phases as it also includes the Central London Zone.

Central London Zone

Central London will be home to venues and road events, which will attract spectators and means there will be more pedestrians in the area. In addition, the Olympic Route Network and Paralympic Route Network (ORN/PRN), required by the host city contract, to transport athletes, officials, media and others working at the Games (the Games Family) to and from competitions will run through the area. In order to ensure the extra pedestrians are safely managed and that the Games Family gets to events on time - with the minimum of disruption for those who live and work in the capital - some additional temporary changes will need to be made to local roads.

The below maps and factsheets show the proposed temporary changes in the Central London Zone on most days during the Games period; there will be additional changes when road events take place and further details about these will be available in the New Year.

The ORN/PRN will help ensure that the Games Family get to events on time. Residents and businesses will have access to their properties and general traffic will be able to use most of the ORN, apart from some sections around St James’s Park and there will be restrictions to the hours that Whitehall and through access through Trafalgar Square is possible . However, to keep traffic moving on these routes there will be some temporary changes. This may include reserving a lane for official Games vehicles, restricting turns into roads, suspending parking and loading bays, and changing bus lanes and stops.

Further temporary changes will be required to ensure the safety of the extra pedestrians in the area. These include closing traffic lanes to give more space to pedestrians, providing wider crossings, and restricting volume of traffic in certain roads. Measures required during the Paralympics are being finalised, but as most events will not take place in central London fewer changes will be required.

Other sections of the ORN and PRN

The ORN has been divided into sections for the purposes of engagement. This is the final section of the ORN to be consulted on. In this final phase, in addition to the Central London Zone, information on the following sections of the ORN/PRN is available:

• Wimbledon Parkside to Wimbledon Venue
• Wimbledon Park side to Nine Elms Lane
• Cumberland Gate to Serpentine Road (Hyde Park)
• A4 Earl’s Court Road to Hyde Park Corner
• Lambeth Palace Road to Tower Hill
• Parliament Square to Vauxhall Cross
• A301 Kingsway Tunnel to Temple Place

Due to the scale of the Central London Zone maps they need to be printed at A1. Hard copies are however available on request.

The Games are a unique and exciting opportunity for London and we have worked with local councils to try to find the safest and most effective solution for each area. TfL understands that, in some cases, your journeys might take longer and you may have to make adjustments to deliveries and parking.
