Whats On
Safetynet Radio
Safetynet is a public safety radio network in the Hammersmith Town Centre, linking the business community with the police, CCTV and BID security team.

Safetynet is an instant radio link to the council CCTV and police control rooms. Safetynet users on the same channel can talk to one another, exchanging timely information important to business and staff safety.
It allows the council control room staff and police to pass details of suspected criminals and other crime and public safety information to all users. It provides a mobile communication facility in and around your premises. Radios operate throughout the borough – staff can take their Safetynet radio with them between their premises and to banks, stations etc. Safetynet allows the council control room and police to communicate with you in the event of a major incident and evacuation.
Safetynet is just one element of the councils integrated public safety system. Together with our town centre CCTV system the objectives are:
- To assist in the prevention of crime and anti social behaviour.
- To assist in the detection of crime and other offences.
- To assist in the identification, apprehension and prosecution of offenders.
- To reduce the fear of crime in the town centre.
- To assist town centre management.
- To assist in the management of emergency services response to major incidents.
Prospective users will be visited by one of our staff who will explain in more detail how the scheme works and discuss it with them. Users will be provided with a radio, battery and charger unit and a system guide with details of other participants in the scheme. Guidance will be given on the use of the radio and procedures to be adopted when speaking on the radio, don’t worry it’s easy.
Users are actively encouraged to use the radio every morning at start of business, to ‘book on’ to our CCTV control room, and to ‘book off’ at the end of the days work. This will enable other users to hear who is ‘on watch’ at a given time, but more importantly, acts as a radio check for the user to satisfy themselves that their radio is operating properly every day.
Once you have your Safetynet radio, then it’s over to you. For example:
- If you have a problem inside or outside your store that you think our CCTV room should be aware of, call them up and speak to them.
- If you have a crime taking place inside your store, call our CCTV room and ask them to monitor the store entrance to catch images of the suspect as they leave.
- If you need police urgently, call our control room and ask for the police to be informed. The local police have access to the Safetynet radio system and may call you back and speak directly to you.
- If you see a known thief leaving your store and want to alert others in the area, then use the radio to tell them all at the same time.
- If you are a public house or café and have had to eject one or more people for their behaviour, then call up others on the Safetynet radio scheme and let them know. It could make all the difference to a security guard, shop assistant, or publican if they know beforehand about problems that a person has caused to one of your neighbours.
- Don’t forget, our CCTV room can relay the messages to other Safetynet radio users in other parts of the area who may be working on a different radio channel to yours.
