WISE UP with HammersmithLondon

Wise Up was an event bonanza with a strategic aim of engaging with the business community by providing community awareness and crime prevention advice to all. The two day event (16th and 17th November) took place on the Lyric Square and invited employees of the business world to:
Wise Up...… with crime prevention advice
Wise Up…... with our Book Swap
Wise Up…... to the Olympics Games
Wise Up…....with Dr Bike

Wise Up...… with crime prevention advice
Crime prevention advice was delivered in conjunction with the MET Police, in addition to a crime prevention workshop.

The workshop on Thurday 17th November, was very much informative about the serious bag dipping crime which is on the rise in Hammersmith town centre. The MET police successflly gave the warning to all shoppers of Hammersmith to ensure thay have in place preventative measures to combat this new wave of crime and provided useful tips to avoid being victim of such a crime. A crowd engaging demonstration took place in the afternoon to show how easy it is to be a victim.

The message was very much: "Don’t be a victim of crime: our police officers will give you crime prevention tips… and see if you can avoid our phantom bag-dipper…"

Wise Up.....with Book Swap

Books for Amnesty kindly donated an assortments of books for various reading levels.

All kinds of books were brought along to be swapped! From your old blockbusters to your heavy novels such as "War and Peace". No book was excluded. This two day event on the 16th and 17th November was well turned out and received excellent feedback. The "swap" event proved to be a popular way to mix books, writers and the reading public in the past.

London 2012 Travel Advice workshop. 19 October 2011

Reduce, Re-time, Re-route, Re-mode was very much the message coming out of yesterday’s well-attended Olympic Travel Advice workshops, in association with Transport for London.

With the two-hour workshop tightly targeted to the impact that the Olympic Route Network will have on the busy roads, rail, tube and buses right here in Hammersmith, Rose MacArthur from London2012 (the company organising the Games) lost no time in revealing the sheer scale of the Games. Her initial 40-minute presentation pulled no punches:

• With an extra 8 million people loading down the network, the hub of Hammersmith will be severely affected
• Workers coming in and out of Hammersmith will find their conventional commute severely affected
• Imaginative solutions will be required for all levels of attempts to conduct a normal working day

The four main issues that Rose encouraged all businesses to think about was how the games was going to affect Staffing, Deliveries, Customers and Business Travel. The 2 hour workshop also included an interactive group activity which was notable for the communal desire to share advice and suggestions, consider their own business and the issues that will mostly affect their individual operation’s supply chain and in the wider scheme of things – their sector.

The consensus was that previously, the thinking by most businesses was very much, “It’s not on my doorstep, therefore it will not affect me”. Rose McArthur proved that this way of thinking is WRONG and precautions need to be taken now so that your business and customers would not suffer or take the brunt of the ricochet effects from the Games. “Take nothing for granted with your supply chain!” was an oft-repeated phrase. She concluded the workshop with two case study overviews of SMEs where interventions had already been put in place to mitigate any potential complications that would arise.

HammersmithLondon Halloween Half Term week. 26 - 29 October 2011

Over the Halloween week residents and children on half term break in Hammersmith made the most of the Halloween Festivities organised by HammersmithLondon. The highlight of the free activities which included ghouls, gravestones and cauldrons on Lyric Square, was the popular Pumpkin Hunt Competition.

40 business took part in this years scavenger like Pumpkin Hunt and an overwhelming figure of just over 450 people attended the spooktacular Halloween cabin. The cabin was buzzing with herds of little children, teenagers and parents who all wanted a peice of the action! Visitors to the cabin were greeted by a somewhat "scarrific" wicked witch of Hammersmith, who handed goodie bags and sweets to all those dared crossed her path!

Two local young residents commented "We enjoy [HammersmithLondon's] events throughout the year so much. Especially the Easter Egg and Pumpkin Hunts. You're doing such a great job"
